The Mediterranean has long served as a cultural link between many civilizations. Yet it is also the sea that physically separates them. Lamento dal mare portrays the pain, grief, and suffering of those who have been forced to cross its waters. The lament and the sigh, the work’s central musical elements, gradually intensify the sense of pain and tension, leading the music to a climactic outburst in which grief erupts. After this climax, the lament—unheard and misunderstood—slowly fades into the distance and disappears. The pain, however, remains.
Commissioned by the Festival della Valle d’Itria. Premiered by the Orchestra ICO della Magna Grecia, conducted by Giovanni Pelliccia, on July 17, 2026, at the Basilica of San Martino in Martina Franca, Italy.
