Yet it is also the sea that physically separates them. <em>Lamento dal mare<\/em>  portrays the pain, grief, and suffering of those who have been forced to cross its waters. The lament and the sigh, the work&#8217;s central musical elements, gradually intensify the sense of pain and tension, leading the music to a climactic outburst in which grief erupts. After this climax, the lament\u2014unheard and misunderstood\u2014slowly fades into the distance and disappears. The pain, however, remains.<br><br>Commissioned by the Festival della Valle d&#8217;Itria.
